As a security detection specialist, why am I so passionate about totes? For twenty-five years I worked at Southwest airlines in the Security field and was Manager of the Airport Security Technology group prior to my departure. I have first-hand experience on the impact of dealing with inefficient systems or lost bags. In my current role, I’m working side-by-side with different BHS companies integrating our CT EDS solutions for hold baggage screening. In doing this, I’ve seen the impact a well-designed tote system has on operations.

Last September's [UN Security Council’s unanimous adoption of Resolution 2309](https://www.un.org/press/en/2016/sc12529.doc.htm) sent a strong message to the world. Declaring the global aviation system as being of vital importance to economic development and prosperity, the resolution urged Member States to “strengthen security screening procedures and maximize the promotion, utilization and sharing of new technologies and innovative techniques that maximize the capability to detect explosives and other threats.”

By kick-starting the Standard 3 transition, UK Airports are playing a foundational role developing the process and best practices for European-wide adoption. For airports in Europe upgrading hold baggage screening infrastructure to Standard 3 capabilities, the facts are clear: by September 2018 in the UK and 2020 in continental Europe, all airports must screen checked baggage with an advanced explosives detection systems (EDS).
