ITMS™ Technology - Trace Detection

Trace detectors play a vital role in preventing, deterring and investigating terrorist attacks on high-profile facilities such as embassies, nuclear plants and business headquarters. MDI’s desktop Itemiser® 3 is the world’s first trace detector able to simultaneously detect both explosives and narcotics. MDI’s patented ITMS™ technology (Ion Trap Mobility Spectrometer) features a proprietary ion "trap" that increases ionization efficiency, the main factor determining detection sensitivity. Combining MDI’s ITMS™ technology with a unique membrane filter that blocks contaminants, the Itemiser® 3 device delivers uninterrupted performance even in dirt, humidity and other "real world" conditions. An operator of a direct-sampling Itemiser® 3 device simply swipes a "sample trap" on the surface of any item suspected of being contaminated with traces of contraband and inserts it for automatic analysis. Advanced software eliminates the need for data interpretation, freeing operators to concentrate on obtaining a good sample.

To collect microscopic particles for analysis, MDI’s EntryScan® device — popularly known as the “puffer” — takes advantage of a natural upward airflow around the body called the "human convection plume." Cleaner samples are collected when not using forced airflow from a fan, which stirs up dust and other contaminants. Combined with MDI’s ITMS™ technology, the EntryScan® device delivers higher detection sensitivity. Because there are fewer moving parts, it also offers quieter operation, reduced weight and improved long-term reliability. MDI’s portable VaporTracer2 handheld is light enough (7lb/3.2kg) for tireless, all-day operation, yet versatile enough for the optimal detection of a wider range of contraband.

It "sniffs" vapor samples for traces of contraband as well as analyzes invisible particles collected in "sample traps" swiped over skin, baggage, vehicles, containers, tickets or ID cards. Swiping works well for detecting heroin, marijuana and PETN, while vapor analysis is more effective for dynamite, nitroglycerin and methamphetamine. Equipped with an advanced desorber to boost particle sampling efficiency, the VaporTracer2 handheld employs the same powerful detector and operating system as the Itemiser® 3 device.
